MAGGIE DOUGLAS HOSTING TOWN HALL IN CASS COUNTY
[Nehawka, NE, Dec. 28, 2023] ——State Board of Education District 2 candidate Maggie Douglas will host a town hall January 7th at Slattery Vintage Estates, 8925 Adams Street near Nehawka, from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. All area residents are welcome.
Douglas, a provisional mental health professional and longtime educator, is running to ensure that all children in Nebraska have access to the same resources.
“All students deserve equitable access to quality education, regardless of a student’s background or location;” she said. “ I support initiatives that will reduce achievement gaps and improve outcomes for all students.”
Douglas plans on hosting several town halls throughout District 2, which includes Sarpy, Cass, Otoe, Johnson and Nemaha counties. The seat is currently held by Lisa Fricke, who is not running again and sponsored a fundraiser for Douglas.
Douglas, who resides in Bellevue, graduated from Scottsbluff Public Schools in 2000. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Creighton University in 2004. She later earned two Master’s Degrees from the University of Nebraska- Omaha - one in secondary education and the other in clinical mental health counseling. She also earned a Master’s degree in math education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Her classroom experience includes teaching for Omaha Public Schools for ten years, during which she was named one of the Alice Buffett Outstanding Teacher Award winners in 2019. Prior to working for OPS, she taught at Christ the King School in Omaha for five years. She currently substitute teaches for OPS and supervises student teachers for UNO. Douglas has also been an adjunct professor for Metropolitan Community College in Omaha for the past ten years. Douglas’s substantial qualifications give her the experience needed to better craft policies that address the needs of educators so the District will attract and retain talented educators.
“I believe there is a disconnect between practice and policy,” she said. “I have the life skills, knowledge, personal and professional experience to form and strengthen those connections.”
As a provisional mental health professional, Douglas helps clients tackle issues such as anxiety, depression, and adjustment disorder. A board member with thorough knowledge of mental health issues will be an asset to the Nebraska State Board of Education, she said.
